Buchanan YMCA Youth in Prague!
Summer 2008

"Real Life Has No Borders"
This summer Youth from Buchanan YMCA's teen programs visited Prague to attend the "Real Life Has No Borders" YMCA Europe Festival. Our teens had many opportunities to meet other YMCA participants from all over the world and had a great time visiting one of Europes most picturesque cities.

Sentimental Journey 5 One Great Time Out

On October 25, 2008 the Buchanan YMCA hosted its 5th Annual Sentimental Journey Celebration. It was a wonderful evening of friends, food, and great dancing! With over 200 people in attendance, this was the best event yet! Under the generous committee leadership of volunteers, the Buchanan YMCA raised over $13,000 for the youth and families of the Western Addition. This was a momentous occasion for this annual event.
In 2004, volunteers created Sentimental Journey as a reunion event to bring together friends and family they met through shared experiences at the Buchanan YMCA. Over 125 people attend the festive event each year. Event highlights include dancing, reminiscing, keynote speakers, and a renewed commitment to the Buchanan YMCA as a vital community center for San Francisco.
The event also signifies the Buchanan YMCA’s importance to the Japantown community. The Buchanan YMCA began in 1886 as the Japanese YMCA. In 1936, a new facility built from funds raised by the community allowed the YMCA to open its doors to a broader scope of neighborhood youth and families.
“The Buchanan YMCA is a trusted community nonprofit and proven leader in both physical health and wellness and holistic social services,” said Reeshemah Davis, Executive Director, Buchanan YMCA. “We are excited for this opportunity to honor the passion and loyalty of thousands of YMCA members and affiliates spanning the past 122 years.”
The Sentimental Journey Celebration has expanded from a lunch with keynote speaker and dinner to a dance celebration with attendees from all over the Bay Area, Sacramento, and Southern California.
The monies raised over the years has resulted in youth being sponsored to attend the YMCA World Camp in Czech Prague in August 2008, a scoreboard for the basketball gym being purchased, along with youth team uniforms, a youth trip to Yosemite, and increasing our general scholarship fund.
The Sentimental Journey Committee members are: Tom Hoshiyama, David Jung, Tom Fujimura, Rich Shintaku, Georgette Shintaku, Gail Nanbu, Al Morishita, Don Takakura, David Tom, Sharon Tom, Rodney Chin and Reeshemah Davis. Past members included: Kathy Reyes, Elaine Koga, Ellen Hashiguchi, and Korina Lew.

Mark your calendars for the next event, Saturday, October 24, 2009. It’s going to be a fun party for a great cause.
