Getting Started Water
Fitness Workshops
The
Active Older Adult Program (AOA) offers a wide range of activities
that include walks, fitness classes, water aerobics, and workshops
to meet the needs of its members. Whether you are new to exercise
or are currently active, a fitness plan is available for you.
GETTING STARTED
The Presidio Community YMCA offers fitness
orientations to help members get acquainted with the facility,
equipment and staff. A Wellness Coach will talk with you and discuss
your individual fitness needs, as well as any physical conditions
that may limit your exercise. A comprehensive exercise program
will be designed for you that includes a demonstration of the
activities as well as recorded on your workout card. You don't
have to learn it all in one session. Wellness Coaches are available
for follow-up appointments. To schedule an orientation, please
contact the Member Services Desk at 415/447-9622.
If you are interested in taking a fitness class, please (click here) Presidio Community YMCA Group Exercise for a complete listing of all our classes.
Classes recommended for Active Older Adults are:
Lite n' Lively is light on the
knees and feet but great on the heart and muscles.
Lite Circuit is all about
balance, coordination, and strength.
Presidio Walks are a low-impact,
moderate intensity class exploring the trails of the Presidio
Park.
Subtle Moves focuses on increasing flexibility and range of motion.
WATER FITNESS
Water exercise is a great way for people to workout. If you are
new to fitness, the water environment allows you to set your own
pace and intensity; and to rest when necessary, using the buoyancy
of the water. For those who need a more intense workout, the resistance
water provides acts in all directions on the muscles, regardless
of the movement.
In some ways, water exercise is safer than land-based activity
(i.e., falls don't carry the same threat of injury, and weight-bearing
impact shock is minimal, or eliminated completely with floatation
devices). Water exercise can help improve energy and stamina,
decrease weight injury, build agility and coordination, and control
stress. See pool schedule for a listing of all aqua classes. For
additional information, or to schedule a pool orientation, please
call Jason Castleberry at 415/447-9609, or jcastleberry@ymcasf.org.
Easy Does It helps establish a foundation
of comfort with the water, while improving endurance, increasing range-of-motion, and flexibility of the body.
Aqua Fit provides a greater challenge
cardiovascularly and requires overall coordination and balance,
as well as a focus on building strength and endurance.
