Welcome to the Presidio Community YMCA Group Exercise Department!

Programs are held in our state-of-the-art studios - Studio 1 for general fitness, Studio 2 for Spinning, the Main Post Basketball Court and outdoors in the wonderful Presidio Park.

The 1,685 square foot Studio 1 is designed to suit a variety and capacity of class formats with its specialized spring-coil wood flooring, advanced stereo components, and top-of-the-line group exercise equipment to offer you over 100 diverse class selections per week.

The 600 square foot Studio 2 for Spinning (finished in April 2007) accommodates 24 riders, the Instructor on an elevated platform, surround sound, DLP projection (18'x18' screen) views to the park and fresh air.

The Group Exercise schedule offers you a choice of classes from introductory to advanced cardio, strength and mind/body formats including: Spinning, Yoga, Pilates, Step, Stretch, Karate, Post Natal Workouts, Active Older Adults (AOA) or Presidio Park Walks, Beach Hikes, Bootcamps and seasonal 6-Week Special Sessions*.

All classes* are included with your membership.

  Class Descriptions                                                             

Cardio & Sculpt

Bodyworks - All Levels

Sculpt and strength classes utilizing hand weights, resistance tubing, stability balls, body bars and floor work.

Bodyworks Stretch - All Levels

This format balances 50% of sculpting with 50% of stretching and flexibility work.

BOSU (see variations)

BOSU (Both Sides Up) is a multi-use fitness platform, challenging a range of activities; cardio, strength training, sports conditioning and core training ( Limit:  28 participants).  Additionally Instructors have the option to add the BOSU Trainer to classes as an option.

  • POWER Balance All Levels

A total body conditioning class using your own body weight, dumbbells or bodybars in stable or unstable positions

to strengthen your abdominal muscles through a wider range of motion on the BOSU.

Cardio AM - All Levels

Cardio AM allows the instructor to vary the intensity and format of the class thru the use of Gliding, Step or Low Impact Choreography.  This is a fun all around 60minutes of cardio to get your day started.

Cardio Bootcamp - All Levels

(formerly Cardio-Kickboxing) A high intensity circuit training workout, combining cardio, strength and balance conditioning.

CoreExpress -  All Levels

15 or 25 minute classes focusing on the core and lower back.  Warm-up prior to class recommended.

Core+Stretch -  All Levels

Early morning compliment to our SPINNING programs, providing balance and flexibility to your ride (Studio 1).

Dance Workout - All Levels

A high-energy low-impact aerobic/dance workout for dancers and non-dancers alike.  This class begins with warm-ups and isolations, followed by multiple high-energy sets, finishing with strength and core.

Lunch Combo (see variations)

Try one or all three classes at lunch – strength & core or stretch.

  • BodyworksExpressA 45min version of our sculpt and strength classes utilizing a variety of resistance equipment.
  • CoreExpress A 30min focus on strength and structural alignment thru the torso.
  • Stretch+Relax A 15min focus on lengthening the body, breath work and relaxation with quiet calming music.

Presidio Walk - All Levels

A low-impact class exploring the great paved paths of the Presidio National Park.

Presidio Hike

A 90 minute low-impact, athletic class.  This group covers a variety of terrain and non-paved trails through the Presidio National Park.  Average distance: 6 miles.  Bring layered clothing, walking or trail shoes and water.

STEP (see variations)

Classic Group Exercise!  Low-impact mixed with light, moderate or high intensity choreography.

  • Step IntervalBasic/Intermediate

This class alternates aerobic training with hand weights, body bars and/or resistance tubing.

  • Step Intermediate

Exactly what you’d expect, choreography, entertainment and sweat in a 55min class.

  • Step Advanced

Multiple layers of choreography and movement variations.

Spinning - All classes in Studio 2.

Spinning is a great non-impact workout for those just starting, recreational riders, serious racers and cross-training.  Instructors are available to assist with bike set up.

Sign-up

  • Sign-up begins 30 minutes prior to the start of class.
  • Sign-up is required at the Membership Desk for one of 24 Spinning bikes. 
  • Members (or Guests) who do not sign-up for a bike, may be asked to relinquish the bike.
  • Be on your bike at the start of class.
  • Unclaimed bikes are open for waiting members 5 minutes after the start of class.
  • Do not join a class 10 minutes after the start time.
  • Bring 16oz. to 32oz. of water for your workouts.
  • Cycling shoes are recommended (for best performance), but not required to attend class
  • Cycling shoes with SPD clips.
  • SpinningBasic/Intermediate/Advanced

This is an OPEN STUDIO time providing a Movie of the day.  Audio levels are kept low to allow members to use their personal audio systems (cd/ Mp3 players)

Mind – Body

Pilates / Pilates Mat

Methods developed by Joseph Pilates focuses on stabilization, strength and lengthening the body’s core.

Hatha Yoga

Emphasize physical and mental relaxation through a series of postures.  Improve breathing, posture and alignment, balance, strength and flexibility.

Ananda Yoga

This practice requires a foundation in yoga.  An intensive focused practice on breath with movement.  Slower transitions for alignment are taken to allow deeper benefits.

Yoga Flow

Combine balance, strength and flexibility while moving through elements of Ashtanga and Iyengar to unify mind, body &  breath.

Yogalates

Meld the best from two great practices, Yoga and Pilates.

 

Pre / Post Natal

Bodyworks

A light to moderate intensity cardio & sculpting class great for our pre/post natal members.   Babies are welcome!

itsy-bitsy Bootcamp

Grab the stroller!  Get out in the Presidio Park for a fun morning with your infant!  Dads or Grandparents are welcome also to join.  Bring the water and layered clothing.  Jogging stroller not required.

 

Active Older Adults   (AOA)

Subtle Moves

This class focuses on range of motion, balance, and flexibility, posture, core strength and reducing stress.  For those seeking a non-music, non-impact addition to their workout.

Lite n’ Lively - Light to moderate intensity.

This is a Low-Impact cardio format , easy to follow choreography. Light on the knees, ankles and feet; great on the heart and muscles.

Lite Circuit AOA  (formerly Bodyworks AOA)

A combination class of Low-Impact aerobic movement with balance, coordination and resistance training.  Great for Lite n’ Lively participants and those new to fitness.

Gentle Stretching to Relaxing Music.

Designed to answer current member concerns regarding inflexibility due to aging.  A slow tempo format will concentrate on using dynamic and active stretching to open shoulders, hips and back and to stretch the hands, arms, legs, neck and torso.  The relaxing music will be used to encourage a calm environment for safer stretching at longer durations.  Techniques learned in class can be practiced at home.  The class will also promote a feel-good, rejuvenation factor from sound breathing, posture and fluid range-of-motion exercises done in a supportive, friendly, and an uplifting environment.

"Chairs!" Seated Group Exercise.

Designed for those members who have physical limitations that prevent them from standing for long periods or lying on the floor.  The format of the class will include a warm-up, aerobics, resistance training, and stretching all done either seated in a chair or standing behind or along side the chair for support.  Participants in this class will be seated in a circle so they can hear and see the instructor easily and to promote a social atmosphere that inspires motivation and morale.   American Senior Fitness Association and the National Institute on Aging.

AOA Pilates - Standing and Seated.

Based on the fundamental principles of Joseph Pilates that can be done standing and sitting, this class will help participants assess and improve balance, encourage safer day-to-day movements such as lifting and turning by training the body to work from the core.  It will also help strengthen the stabilizing muscles of the core and improve posture and alignment.  The goal is improved functional fitness, core strength and better balance!

 

YMCABasics

YMCABasics  are offered once a month as an opportunity to learn, ask questions and familiarize yourself with equipment and a short demonstration class.  See Schedule for variations.

YMCAYouthFriendly

YouthFriendly  new in 2008.  Coming to our schedule families will have options for youth between the ages of 9 - 13 with a selection of classes that youth can attend with their parent/guardian.

Shaolin Martial Arts

A great Middle-School / Teen class!  Gain strength, flexibility and confidence - Kajukenbo Karate also improves concentration and agility

Aqua  Contact the Letterman Pool Aquatics Dept. at:  447-9680.

Belly Dance - All Levels.  Combine the rhythms from North Africa with Pilates to create a fun and energetic class.

Cardio Tennis - All Levels.  Great for non-tennis and tennis enthusiasts!  Cardio Tennis combines drill-based and play-based skills!  Courtesy racquets are available.

Cuban Salsa - All Levels

Social Friday evening dancing, no partner required.  Street shoe and attire welcome!

Dance MIX - All Levels

Bring your dance gear and appropriate footwear.  This dance class will work on choreography and flexibility.  Combine the rhythms of Jazz, Hip-Hop or Afro-Cuban to create a fun and energetic dance class (not intended to be a cardio workout).

Shaolin Martial Arts

  Etiquette                                                       

  • Contact your Physician before beginning any exercise program.
  • Do Not enter a Studio when a class is in progress - for your safety and the safety of other members.

  • Studio Equipment.  Do not remove equipment from Studios.  Please feel free to use the Studios and the equipment when a class is not scheduled.  Studio equipment is provided for scheduled Classes.

  • Be respectful of the instructor.  Classes are a group activity.  Individual workouts are a distraction and are not permitted.
  • Be on Time.  Observe the Presidio YMCA’s “10 Minute” rule.  Instructors may decline additional participants to the class - if the class is full, and/or the class is too far along for your safety.
  • Are you…New to Class?  Recovering from an injury?  Pregnant?  Introduce yourself to the instructor at the beginning of class.

  • Wipe down used equipment ...mats, Spinning bikes, or other equipment used during your workout.  Return equipment to proper storage locations.
  • Children (under 13).  For the safety of children and members attending classes, children under the age of 13 may not be in Studios during Adult Fitness Classes.  See "Youth Friendly" for options.
  • Personal items.  Utilize locker rooms or dime lockers to secure personal items and backpacks.
  • Be considerate of other member’s exercise space.
  • Water in unbreakable containers with closeable caps.
  • If you feel ill and need to leave class, let the instructor know.
  • Dogs/Pets.  Only companion animals or guide dogs are allowed in the studio.  Please present appropriate documentation.

 

  Cellular Free Zone                         

Use of Cellular Phones & Camera Phones is permitted only in the front Lobby.  These devices are strictly prohibited from use in Presidio YMCA Locker Rooms, Group Exercise areas, the Fitness Floor and Basketball courts.

YOGA

WORKSHOPS

Enjoy small group training in low ratio classes. 

Instructors provide individual attention and adjustments to improve your confidence and familiarity with hatha poses and progressions. 

Workshops are designed for up to six participants per Workshop; in 4 or 6 consecutive week sessions.

Intensives are designed for up to 20 participants per session to focus on singular or series of poses allowing for growth and depth of practice.

Day Retreats.  2008/2009 will be the launch of YMCA Day Retreats.  Participants will meet at, or travel to mindful locations in the Marin Headlands or nearby Napa/Sonoma areas.  Retreats will include meals, multiple retreat leaders and/or symposiums - vistas and quiet surroundings.

Subscription Series.  2008/2009 will be the launch of our Yoga Subscription Series.  Participants will be in low ratio sessions have 5 sessions to select from in a full series, or select to attend individual sessions from the series.  Sessions may include:  Meditation, Guided Imagery, Stress or Yoga for Injury Recovery.

Bring your Yoga mat. Additional props are provided.  For workshop dates, levels, and Instructors, see below.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Create Your Home Practice

Focus on alignment, exploration and discussion how yoga can benefit your body mechanics on a daily basis.   This 4-Week Session is suitable for those with some yoga experience.  Maximum attendance: 12 participants.

Yoga Level 1-2

All experience levels and abilities are encouraged to learn or review  gentle hatha poses.   Develop and explore strength, mobility, and balance through an intuitively guided approach designed to prepare you for a solo or group practice.

Yoga Level 2-4

For participants with a knowledge of basic hatha poses and a  recently active  yoga practice of 6+ months.  Deepen and refine your yoga practice in this intermediate level workshop.  Learn how to tune in to your own intuitive voice and inner wisdom and how to make adaptations for your individual needs as we explore a variety of asanas including back bends, forward bends, twists and inversions.

Intensive - Back Bends & Hip Openers

Explore exhilarating, energy-enhancing backbends and satisfying hip-opening sequences that increase mobility in the lower back, hips, knees and ankles, and offer a pathway to many other yoga poses.  Regular practice improves strength, flexibility and posture and leads to a greater sense of freedom and aliveness.  Suitable for those with some yoga experience.

This Workshop is designed to teach alignment and preliminary movement skills for Pilates or any exercise routine.  Learn the basics of mobility, release, balance and injury prevention.  Enjoy a supportive and inter-active environment.
