The YMCA of San Francisco creates solutions to challenges in our community through programs that enrich the lives of all people in spirit, mind and body.
Issue

All people need opportunities to lead healthy, productive lives regardless of their financial circumstances.

Solution

The YMCA of San Francisco serves people who can’t afford the price of a facility membership, a class or a program, as well as those who can, by seeking donations to make participation possible for all.  You can make a significant and positive impact in the life of a deserving child, youth or adult by make a charitable contribution to the YMCA of San Francisco today.

Additionally, the YMCA addresses specific community issues through a variety of

programs provided at no cost or with substantial subsidies.  These programs are

provided by the generosity of donors.  For samples of our crucial program work,

please read our case brochure and view a snapshot of issues at the bottom of the page.

   CRUCIAL PROGRAM WORK

Issue One in three children living in San Francisco is obese.

Solution

The YMCA of San Francisco is helping children learn to take care of their bodies for greater overall health, balance and self-esteem.  When Kayla was in the 4th grade, she couldn’t do a sit-up.  With a focus on fitness, she was able to work up to 45.  Kayla is one of over 2,500 San Francisco elementary school students who have been reintroduced to physical education thanks to the PEP program that brings YMCA instructors into San Francisco public schools.

Issue  Over 20% of seniors suffer from depression.

Solution

The YMCA’s older adult programs help seniors stay healthy in spirit, mind and body.  “The YMCA gives me something to look forward to and a reason to get up in the morning.  I didn’t know I could quilt or make a speech in front of a group of people, and now I know I can do both.  I feel like I’m needed,”  said Dori, who came to the YMCA after retirement and quickly became involved in the Shih Yu-Lang Central YMCA Senior Center.

Issue  Gang-related crimes peak between the hours of 4:00-7:00 pm.

Solution

The YMCA Aptos Teen Center offers youth a better alternative.  “The worst case scenario:  If not for the Teen Center, I could be on the streets or in a gang,” Elias, a student at Aptos Middle School, knows he wants more out of life.  This articulate, passionate eighth grader began going to the Teen Center two years ago.  Before becoming a program participant, he was getting Ds and Fs.  Now, his grades are mostly Bs.
