YOUTH DANCE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Class sessions vary between 6 and 8 classes.

There is no proration of fees for missed classes.

Creative Movement (ages 3-4)

This class is designed to develop preschool-age children’s motor skills and body awareness.  Children will work on basic movement such as turning, hopping, rolling, and skipping. Strength and flexibility training are emphasized. The instructor encourages the children to become confident individuals and, because of this training, they will increase their ability at having good posture in and out of the class. Basic ballet positions will be taught, although this is not specifically a ballet class. Additionally, children will do activities that require them to use their imagination to practice different “animal movements.” Lastly, we will work on different movement qualities such as being graceful, and children will learn the principles of counting beats and rhythms to music. No prior dance experience is required.

Dance Basics 1 (ages 5-8)

(3- to 4-year-olds may attend this class with instructor's permission.)

In this basic level class, children will be taught beginning ballet, jazz, and ethnic dance. This class emphasizes strength and flexibility. Students will learn about different dance and music styles of the Americas, such as salsa, Afro-Haitian, reggae, funk, and hip-hop. Children will learn a choreographed dance piece that will be shown to parents the last class of each session, in our class presentation. No prior dance experience is required if your child is between 5 and 8 years of age.

Intermediate Dance Basics 2 - Intermediate (ages 9-12)

(5- to 8-year-olds may attend this class with instructor's permission.)

In this intermediate level class, children will be taught beginning ballet, jazz, and ethnic dance.  Designed for 9- to 12-year-olds as well as younger intermediate level dancers, this class emphasizes strength and flexibility. Students will build on skills learned in the level one class. Students will learn about different dance and music styles of the Americas such as salsa, Afro-Haitian, reggae, funk, and hip-hop. Children will learn a choreographed dance piece, which will be shown to parents the last class of each session, in our class presentation. No prior dance experience is required if your child is between 9 and 12 years of age.

Youth Service Bureau

(Vision/Mission)

Youth Service Bureau programs are designed to support and nurture families in the development of connected, healthy, and productive youth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clinic-Based Services

The Youth Service Bureau agencies provide family, group, and individual counseling services.  Programs guide youth to making positive choices and support families by providing various counseling and support services.  Services include, not limited to, parent education, violence prevention, anger management techniques, communication skills, and youth counseling.

To arrange for counseling, contact your local agency. The intake coordinator will assist in scheduling by gathering the information necessary to ensure that Counseling service fees are determined on a sliding scale basis. We also accept families with Medi-Cal coverage.

Friendship Club - A socialization group for elementary-aged youth. The youth develop relationships, conflict management skills, assertiveness skills, and learn to understand social cues utilizing games, art, and fun activities.

First STOP - A substance abuse education and prevention program. Youth will learn to identify triggers to drug/alcohol use, discuss decision making, and understanding patterns modeled in their community.

School-Based Programs

The Youth Service Bureau agencies provide on-campus counseling and case management services to schools in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Programs are designed to meet the changing needs of the community.

C.A.L.M. (Communication And Life-skills Management) - An anger management group for youth that are acting out at school. The goals of the program are to 1) increase knowledge of anger management skills and techniques, 2) increase conflict resolution skills, 3) decrease their school disciplinary referrals, and 4) decrease their own desire towards violent behavior.

Girls United - An on-campus program addressing issues facing middle-school-aged girls. The program empowers young women to create healthy relationships and avoid making self-destructive decisions, encourages leadership skills, and develops sense of responsibility in school, peer, and home environments.

Community Programs

T.E.A.C.H. (Teaching Everyone About Changing Habits) - An afterschool program designed to keep youth out of the juvenile justice system and prevent gang involvement. The program setting provides a safe and structured environment for youth to learn life skills, improve academic performance, develop healthy relationships, and instill hope for their future.

Building Futures - One-to-one mentoring program serving youth ages 6-14 years. Mentors provide young people with a consistent adult role model, an understanding ear, and the opportunity to solve problems.
